Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes-Polymer Composites

This study was carried out to improve the mechanical performance of polymer composites using silica-based, waste, and nanomaterials. To achieve this, marble dust of millimeter size, silica fume of micrometer size, and Nano-SiO 2 of nanometer size were added separately or in combination to the polymer matrix. The samples were tested to obtain the compressive strength, tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse wave velocity, dynamic modulus of elasticity, toughness, and density of reinforced polymer composites.

Right from the early days, polymer materials have been discovered as being beneficial for various applications but a poor understanding of these materials greatly handicapped their usage. However, with a change in this trend, polymer materials have gradually displaced other materials in most applications. In recent times, due to improved research and knowledge, polymer-based materials are the first choice materials for several applications and are now replacing other materials rapidly.

The increase of environmental awareness has led to interest in the use of materials with eco-friendly attributes. In this study, a sandwich composite was developed from polyester and kenaf fiber with various orientation arrangements. The tensile, flexural, and Izod impact tests of the sandwich composites were evaluated by using a universal tensile tester and an impact tester. The kenaf fiber in anisotropic orientation could absorb the impact energy and allow the sandwich composite to withstand greater impact forces compared to composite with fiber in perpendicular or isotropic orientations.
