In the method of the self-consistent field, the one-electron energies of the occupied orbitals agree closely with ionization energies of the corresponding atom or molecular system. To compare such calculations with experiment, we need a table of ionization energies of the atoms.

Figure 1. In , after returning to Copenhagen, he began publishing his theory of the simplest atom, hydrogen, based on the planetary model of the atom. For decades, many questions had been asked about atomic characteristics. From their sizes to their spectra, much was known about atoms, but little had been explained in terms of the laws of physics. Niels Bohr, Danish physicist, used the planetary model of the atom to explain the atomic spectrum and size of the hydrogen atom. His many contributions to the development of atomic physics and quantum mechanics, his personal influence on many students and colleagues, and his personal integrity, especially in the face of Nazi oppression, earned him a prominent place in history.

A quantum mechanical system or particle that is bound —that is, confined spatially—can only take on certain discrete values of energy, called energy levels. This contrasts with classical particles, which can have any amount of energy. The term is commonly used for the energy levels of the electrons in atoms , ions , or molecules , which are bound by the electric field of the nucleus , but can also refer to energy levels of nuclei or vibrational or rotational energy levels in molecules. The energy spectrum of a system with such discrete energy levels is said to be quantized. In chemistry and atomic physics , an electron shell, or principal energy level, may be thought of as the orbit of one or more electrons around an atom 's nucleus.

The atomic molecular theory provides us a particulate understanding of matter. Each element is characterized as consisting of identical, indestructible atoms with atomic weights which have been determined. Compounds consists of identical molecules, each made up from a specific number of atoms of each of the component elements.
