Tanner's latest book are the seesaw battles between communist and nationalist forces over control of the railway junction of Siping—located in south-central Manchuria or today's eastern Liaoning province. The heart of the book is chapter five and chapter six, a meticulous military history of the Second Battle of Siping that ran from March through May Communist forces under Lin Biao were forced to flee the city, suffering heavy losses under relentless air and tank assaults.

Tanner builds up to the nationalist victory at Siping by developing in earlier chapters the larger historical context, explaining why the siege of Siping was so important strategically and internationally. The international dimension was General George Marshall's controversial and much studied effort to end the civil war by negotiating in person a series of ceasefires leading to a final peace Most users should sign in with their email address.
